Pilate turns over Jesus to be beaten by the Romans. The legal non-Roman citizen limit was 39 lashes, but this was not a typical beating. Jesus was beaten beyond recognition, causing him to die earlier than expected. The cross references to the Old Testament tell the bigger story and speak to the divine exchange as Jesus is illegally beaten to release healing.
